Meanwhile, at the cathode, water reacts with sodium ions to produce hydrogen gas and sodium hydroxide solution. The chemical reactions can be summarized as follows

Additionally, the electrolysis process requires a substantial amount of electricity, making energy consumption a critical factor in the overall production cost. The demand for energy can also have environmental implications, particularly if the electricity used is derived from fossil fuel sources, which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
