Strontium chloride is an inorganic salt and is the most common strontium salt. Its aqueous solution is weakly acidic (due to the weak hydrolysis of Sr2+). Similar to other strontium compounds, strontium chloride appears red under flame, so it is used to make red fireworks.

Its chemical properties are between barium chloride (which is more toxic) and calcium chloride.
It is a precursor to other strontium compounds, such as strontium chromate. It is used as a corrosion inhibitor for aluminum.

Chromate ions are similar to sulfate ions and their corresponding precipitation reactions are similar:

SrCl2 + Na2CrO4 → SrCrO4 + 2 NaCl Strontium chloride is occasionally used as a red colorant in fireworks.
